Every small TikTok Shop seller eventually hits the same week. The team is traveling for Thanksgiving, the warehouse person is out between Christmas and New Year’s, or a storm shuts the building for three days. Orders keep coming in from creator videos that went up weeks ago, and every order you can’t ship on time counts against your shop.
TikTok’s answer is Holiday Mode, a switch in Seller Center that stops new orders while you’re away. It’s useful, and it’s also easy to misread. It doesn’t pause the orders you already have, it doesn’t touch inventory sitting in a Fulfilled by TikTok warehouse, and it takes about an hour to kick in. This guide follows TikTok’s US Seller University article “How to Use Holiday Mode” (dated September 10, 2025) and its US Warehouse Management page, and adds the planning we’d do before closing a shop for the holidays.
Short version. Turn on Holiday Mode in Seller Center under Account Settings → Holiday Mode and set a date range. New orders stop: the store page says you’re on vacation and products show as sold out. Products in FBT warehouses keep selling. Existing orders still have to ship on time, and after-sales requests you don’t handle within 48 hours are auto-approved. It takes about an hour to switch on and about an hour to switch off. You can apply it to the whole store or to specific warehouses.
What Holiday Mode Actually Changes
TikTok lists four effects when Holiday Mode is on. Each one matters for a different part of your business.
1. Buyers can’t place new orders
The store page shows a notice that the seller is on vacation. Every warehouse tied to the store goes into Holiday Mode, inventory is cleared, and products display as “sold out” so they can’t be purchased. That applies everywhere a buyer might find the product: your shop tab, a creator’s video, a search result.
There’s one important exception. TikTok says that when a product is still in stock in a Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT) warehouse, the vacation notice isn’t displayed and products in FBT warehouses can still be sold. TikTok ships those orders, so your absence doesn’t matter. If you split inventory between your own warehouse and FBT, Holiday Mode effectively turns your shop into an FBT-only shop for the dates you choose. Our guide to seller-fulfilled vs. Fulfilled by TikTok covers that trade-off in depth.
2. Messages get an automatic reply
Buyers can still message you through IM while you’re in Holiday Mode. If you set an auto-reply, the system sends it to anyone who writes in. TikTok recommends including the date range of your break and when you’ll be able to respond. Its own sample reads, in part: “We will be away from 1st Feb to 15th Feb. Messages will be replied to within 48 hours during this period.”
3. Performance is assessed under different rules
TikTok says the platform uses different rules to assess store performance during the holiday and points sellers to its Seller Performance Evaluation Policy for details. That’s the main reason the feature exists: TikTok frames Holiday Mode as a way to stop incoming orders so your store’s performance metrics aren’t hurt while you can’t fulfill. It is not a blanket pardon, as the next section shows.
4. Traffic drops
TikTok states plainly that store traffic will decrease during the holiday. Sold-out products don’t convert, so expect less distribution while you’re away and a period of rebuilding when you come back.
What Holiday Mode Does Not Pause
This is where sellers get caught. TikTok’s note on the feature is explicit:
- Existing orders. Holiday Mode does not apply to current orders. Anything placed before it takes effect still has to ship within the shipping time limit. TikTok’s FAQ adds that you can turn Holiday Mode on with unprocessed orders, but those orders must be processed in time or your store metrics will be affected. Our late shipment rate guide explains what a missed ship-by date costs.
- After-sales for past orders. Returns, refunds and other after-sales requests keep arriving. TikTok says that if you don’t process a buyer’s after-sales request within 48 hours, it is automatically approved. Over a long weekend, that can mean refunds going out on requests you would have questioned.
- Buyer messages. IM stays open. An auto-reply sets expectations, but TikTok still recommends checking messages to avoid negative ratings or comments.
- The hour in between. Holiday Mode takes about an hour to take effect after you turn it on. Orders can still come in during that window, and TikTok asks sellers to wait at least five minutes before doing anything else after switching it on.
How to Turn On Holiday Mode, Step by Step
For the whole store
- In Seller Center, open My Account → Account Settings and choose Holiday Mode.
- Turn Holiday Mode on and set the date range of your break.
- Turn on the IM automatic reply and write a message with your dates and expected response time.
- Confirm, then wait. TikTok says it takes about an hour to take effect.
For one warehouse
If you have more than one warehouse, you don’t have to close everything. TikTok’s Holiday Mode page says you can apply it to specific warehouses by clicking More, turning on the warehouse list and selecting the ones to pause. The US Warehouse Management page describes the same thing from the logistics side: under Account settings → Holiday mode → Warehouse holiday mode settings, select the warehouse, turn Holiday Mode on, confirm the period and click Done. A warehouse in Holiday Mode has its inventory set to zero for that period.
This is handy for brands with an East Coast and a West Coast location, or a 3PL plus an in-house stockroom. Close the location that’s short-staffed and let the other keep shipping.
Turning it off
Click Turn Off and confirm. Within about an hour, inventory returns to its previous level, buyers can place orders again, and TikTok resumes assessing all metrics. Plan around that hour. If you have a LIVE or a creator push scheduled for your first morning back, switch Holiday Mode off the night before, not ten minutes before you go live.
Closing for the Holidays Without Losing Momentum?
Sold Out Brands plans creator, LIVE and ads calendars around stock, staffing and shipping cutoffs, so a week off doesn’t undo a month of growth.
Apply to Work With Us →When Holiday Mode Is the Right Call, and When It Isn’t
TikTok describes the feature for times you’re unable to manage new orders: holidays, unforeseen events, bad weather and similar disruptions. In practice, the decision comes down to one question: can anyone ship orders inside your ship-by window during these dates?
| Situation | Usually the better move | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Nobody can pack or ship for several days | Store-wide Holiday Mode | Late shipments hurt more than a few days of lost sales. |
| One of two warehouses is closed | Warehouse-level Holiday Mode | The open location keeps selling. |
| Most hero SKUs already sit in FBT | Holiday Mode, let FBT carry the shop | TikTok says FBT stock stays on sale. |
| A one-day closure, like Thanksgiving Day itself | Often no Holiday Mode | If orders from that day can still ship on time the next working day, closing costs traffic for little benefit. Check your ship-by window first. |
| A big creator video or LIVE is scheduled | Avoid Holiday Mode those dates | Sold-out products waste the attention you paid for. |
The 2026 calendar puts Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, Christmas on Friday, December 25 and New Year’s Day on Friday, January 1, 2027. Those three days sit inside the busiest selling stretch of the year, which is why we treat Holiday Mode as a last resort in Q4 and a normal tool the rest of the year. Our TikTok Shop Q4 strategy guide covers how to staff and stock that period so you rarely need it.
A Holiday-Closure Plan That Protects the Shop
A week or more before
- Decide store-wide or warehouse-level. If you use FBT, check which SKUs actually have FBT stock. Those keep selling, so make sure inventory there is enough to last the break.
- Tell your creators. Affiliates promoting your products will see them go sold out. Give active creators your dates so they don’t post into a dead link, and line up content for the day you’re back.
- Review paid campaigns. Promoting products buyers can’t purchase wastes budget. Pause or shift ads that point at seller-fulfilled SKUs for the closure dates, or move spend toward FBT products.
- Pick someone to watch after-sales. With the 48-hour auto-approval rule, somebody should check returns and refund requests at least every other day, even on a phone.
The day you switch it on
- Ship everything first. Clear every open order before you leave, and remember that orders can still arrive in the hour it takes Holiday Mode to activate. TikTok’s own advice is to set it up in advance.
- Write a specific auto-reply. Include the return date and a realistic response time. “Back January 2, replies within 48 hours” beats “We’re away!”
- Confirm it took effect. After an hour, check your store page from a buyer’s view and spot-check a few product links from creator videos.
Coming back
- Turn it off the evening before. Give the roughly one-hour restore time plenty of room before your first ship day.
- Work the backlog in order: after-sales requests first, then messages, then the new orders that start arriving.
- Restart demand on purpose. TikTok says traffic drops during the holiday. A planned LIVE, a creator wave or a voucher on your first day back helps the shop recover faster than waiting for distribution to return by itself.
Common Holiday Mode Mistakes
- Turning it on as you walk out the door. It takes about an hour, and orders placed in that hour still need to ship on time.
- Assuming it pauses everything. Existing orders, after-sales and buyer messages all continue.
- Forgetting FBT keeps selling. That’s usually good news, but if FBT stock is low, you can sell out for real while you’re away.
- Leaving it on too long. Every extra day is a day of lost traffic and sales. Set an end date when you turn it on.
- Using it to hide an inventory problem. If one SKU is short, fix that listing’s stock instead of closing the whole store.
- Giving shared logins to cover the break. If someone else will watch the shop, add them as a user with the right role. Our guide on how to give an agency access to TikTok Shop walks through Seller Center’s user management.
Who Should Cover Your Shop Over the Holidays?
Holiday Mode is the right tool for a solo founder who truly can’t ship for a week. For a brand whose TikTok Shop is a real revenue line, closing during peak season has a cost that’s easy to underestimate: lost sales during the break, lost momentum with creators, and a slow restart afterward. The alternatives are boring but effective. Move your best sellers into FBT before the season, stagger time off so someone can ship, or bring in a partner who runs creators, LIVE and ads through the holidays and plans stock and shipping around the calendar. That last option is what we do.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Holiday Mode do on TikTok Shop?
According to TikTok's US Seller University, Holiday Mode stops new orders. The store page shows that the seller is on vacation, inventory in the affected warehouses is cleared, and products display as sold out. Buyers can still message you, and an automatic reply you set goes out. TikTok says store traffic decreases and the platform assesses performance under different rules while it is on.
Does Holiday Mode stop orders from Fulfilled by TikTok inventory?
No. TikTok says that when a product is still in stock in a Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT) warehouse, the vacation notice is not shown and products in FBT warehouses can still be sold. Holiday Mode zeroes out seller-fulfilled warehouse inventory, not FBT stock.
Do I still have to ship orders placed before I turned on Holiday Mode?
Yes. TikTok says Holiday Mode does not apply to current orders. You must still ship them within the shipping time limit and handle after-sales for past orders, and after-sales requests you don't process within 48 hours are automatically approved.
How long does Holiday Mode take to turn on or off?
About an hour each way, per TikTok. After you turn it off, inventory returns to its previous level and buyers can order again within about an hour, so switch it back on ahead of any LIVE, creator push or promotion.
Can I put only one warehouse in Holiday Mode?
Yes. TikTok lets you apply Holiday Mode to the whole store, which covers every warehouse, or to selected warehouses through the warehouse holiday mode settings. A warehouse in Holiday Mode has its inventory set to zero for the period you choose.
